Julia Karr: In The Fort!

Welcome Julia Karr to The Fort!
About Julia: Julia was born in Indiana, and moved to Chicago when she was fifteen. After the initial culture shock of going from quiet, small town living to Carl Sandburg's, "stormy, husky, brawling," metropolis, she fell madly in love with the city. Her schooling in the art of writing came from reading, voraciously. While students were being forced to read the classics, Julia was busy going on author binges. As a young mother, reading books to, and eventually with, her daughters, she fell head-over-heels for children's literature. Not a far stretch for someone who had loved reading since the age of three. While still working a nine-to-five job, after hours Julia can be found at home, sitting on the couch tapping out stories on her laptop, with one of several cats draped behind her and her dogs sleeping nearby.

About XVI: Nina Oberon's life is pretty normal: she hangs out with her best friend, Sandy, and their crew, goes to school, plays with her little sister, Dee. But Nina is 15. And like all girls she'll receive a Governing Council-ordered tattoo on her 16th birthday. XVI. Those three letters will be branded on her wrist, announcing to all the world - even the most predatory of men - that she is ready for sex. Considered easy prey by some, portrayed by the Media as sluts who ask for attacks, becoming a "sex-teen" is Nina's worst fear. That is, until right before her birthday, when Nina's mom is brutally attacked. With her dying breaths, she reveals to Nina a shocking truth about her past - one that destroys everything Nina thought she knew. Now, alone but for her sister, Nina must try to discover who she really is, all the while staying one step ahead of her mother's killer.

Favorite comfort food?
Homemade macaroni and cheese! Nothing fancy, just the basics – macaroni, cheese.

Favorite game?
Basketball. I think there’s a law that if you’re born and raised in Indiana, you love basketball!  Or Scrabble.

Flannel, fleece or Snuggie?
Flannel. I mean, what is not hot about a guy in—oh, wait… you meant for me?

If you had to choose Snuggie, which color would you pick?
Must I? Do they come in plaid?

Fluffy socks or slippers?
Uh…er… I wear fluffy socks inside my slippers!

Favorite drink?
I’m a green tea addict (gunpowder or jasmine), but… on a crisp, fall afternoon, there is nothing like hot apple cider spiced with cinnamon!

Ghost story or no? Do you remember any from slumber parties past?
Ghost stories, yes and true ones at that. None from slumber parties though, my group of friends were not slumber partiers.

Truth? Or dare?
Truth – always.

What singer/musician/band is a must have for The Fort soundtrack?
Besides The Beatles? I mean, life does not exist without The Beatles in it. Glad we got that settled. Now, can we have a little Temptations?

What movie would you bring to watch?
Oh my… the six hour Pride and Prejudice would be awesome – over and over again! (Or, The Court Jester)

Who's the ideal male mascot for The Fort and why?
Colin Firth (see previous answer) Oh, and a dip in a nearby lake beforehand would be perfect.

Marshmallows, lightly toasted or burned to a crisp?
No marshmallows, thank you – unless they are vegan, in which case, lightly toasted, please… except for that burning edge! Blow it out! Darn. *sniggers*

Awake all night or first one to sleep?
Awake all night. And most likely trying to keep someone else awake to talk with. Failing that, is there a book to read? Ah, yes...

If awake all night, innocent practical joke or no?
Not really a practical joke kind of person. But, I might be willing to talk someone else into doing a practical joke. I did that once, in 7th grade, to my geography teacher. Well, the guy I talked into doing it still remembers. He told me it's his son's favorite story.

If you could have any YA author visit The Fort and tell stories, who would it be and what story would you ask them to tell?
Gonna fudge here a little, because I think, technically, When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is considered Middle Grade. But, I’d love to have her visit and tell time-travel, quantum physics or any other kind of story she’d like to tell.

Thanks for answering the questions!
Thanks for asking them!

  1. Wonderful post. I was lured here in large part by the promise of Colin Firth in a bathtub, and I thank you both for delivering on that.
