Banned Books Week Giveaway

I never expected the week to go quite like it has.

I wish I could give you a lovely recap of the results of Sunday's post, shine everything up and put a bow on it, but I can't. My personal struggle with what to show and what to hide isn't resolved. I don't know how to go back to being the casual guest at the internet cocktail party - maybe I should write a scintillating post about sex next. "How to Incorporate Were-Platypi in the Bedroom! Ten Ways to Please Your Shapeshifter!"

I think the thing that is so surprising is that I spoke up for SPEAK and Laurie Halse Anderson, and the right for individual parents to decide what their own children read, and yet I somehow hit a vein for Christian writers who struggle with balancing their faith and their work. I feel you guys. I hear you. I think I have to take some kind of action, but I don't know what it is. I'm considering an email loop? A private message board? Running, far, far away and hiding my introverted light under a bushel? We'll see. To lay down some Christianese, I have to pray about it.

But here on the old blog, I'm going to get back to business as usual.

SO LET'S GET WILD AND CRAZY AND GIVE SOME STUFF AWAY! HOW ABOUT BANNED BOOKS?

Starting with three copies of SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Followed by a copy of TWENTY BOY SUMMER by Sarah Ockler.

And to make it a magical number five, one of my favorite banned books of all time, HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE!

All you have to do is comment below and let me know which book you want to win. [SPEAK is for residents of the US and Canada only. The others are open internationally to places Book Depository ships for free!] And thank you to all of you who commented and became part of the movement to SPEAK LOUDLY.

(((hugs)))

  1. Oh yeah. I forgot that HP was banned in some primary schools...it was quite a predicament, wasn't it? Thanks for the contest! I'd love either a copy of Speak or HP. (I have read most of HP series, but I don't have my own copy :O ; I have my own copy of Twenty Boy Summer and am shocked that it's a 'banned book')

  5. I would love to read SPEAK. My daughter hs read this book and she loves it. I told her they were banning it and she got very very upset because she said the message is good for kids it lets you feel that its ok to tell.. You dont have to be afraid. She is 14 and she said the book will help teens if not just be a great story.
My second choice is 20 boy summer. Never heard about it so why not.

  6. I agree that there are certain books I wouldn't want my 13 yo reading but sometimes people are such idiots. Do they ever read the books they say are so terrible. JK Rowlings is my HERO. She encouraged a whole generation to read. I can't imagine why any parent who refuse to let their child read Harry Potter. It's a boy who fights evil. He has a choice to be good or bad and he chooses good. Discouraging a child from reading, what is wrong with these people. I want my child to read and to learn from what he's read. I want him to use his imagination and become the charaters he reads about. Well thats my rant for the day.
I would like the Harry Potter book because between my 22 yo and myself its pretty worn and i hope that my 12yo will read these books and love them as much as his brother and I.

  8. I almost feel bad commenting because, well, I don't deserve to win any of these books - I feel like it's my duty to have read/bought them already! But, I haven't (we can't read EVERYTHING!) so I'd LOVE a copy of 20 Boy Summer. Continue to rock my socks off, Myra. :) xoxo

  9. The internet cocktail party? I struggled with this, but I decided the best way to build a platform and market myself was to be authentic. My life and personality is imperfect so why not be that? Be brave, be a champion for the things you believe in. Jesus was imperfect too, but he was the bravest of us all. He was a champion for change and authenticity. Good luck with everything. Speak looks like it needs a home downunder.

  12. I'd love to win SPEAK. Just heard about it thought all the chatter regarding the controversy. All publicity is good publicity. Isn't that what they say in hollywood? Now, people who might've never heard about it will have a chance to read it. Thanks.

  13. Lot of buzz around Speak - I'd love to win that. Hmmm. I'd forgotten about HP being banned. I am one of those shameless people who has NOT read the books...

  14. I'd love to win Speak. I have to admit I haven't read the book yet but I'd love to, even before they banned it (which I really think they shouldn't have done to such a beautiful book). In fact I don't really understand why they have to ban these books...

  21. Gosh it is really sad that books get banned obviously for the wrong reasons!

In Greece, we only have a few books as required reading at school and they mostly have to do with post-war stories etc.
I don't think we have banned a lot ofbooks..but maybe that is because not many books get written on ban-worthy (if that is ever true) subjects.

Erm, I'm not sure I deserve a book since living in Greece renders me kind of useless in this, but entering anyways! :)

  23. I love you for this. Wait. I loved you already.

I love you more for this.

As a Christian, as a parent, and as a writer trying to establish myself, I sometimes do struggle with how much to reveal about myself online. I know that my roles in life give me pause in my writing sometimes, too as the roles sometimes clash. But I feel better knowing I'm not the only one who has these struggles. So, yeah, I know I would benefit from further talk.

    Fab giveaway, hon.

  25. I'd forgotten about the kerfuffle about the Harry Potter books. There was never much call for banning books where I live, but I do remember when my sister was in middle school kids had to have written permission from their parents to check it out of the school library.
I'm in the UK and own the Harry Potters and Speak, but haven't read Twenty Boy Summer yet. :)

  26. Cheers! Great contest ^_^ HP is also my most favourite banned book series of all time, actually its my favourite series of all time. Speak is also a great book and Twenty Boy Summer is on my TBR shelf :).

The great thing about books is you get to choose to read it or not and imagine what this world would be like without these "controversial book" There was a time that books about interacial marriage or female infidelity would have been banned. I would like Twenty B0y Summer though any of the three would be great. Thanks
